The NEET UG counselling process in India is a multi-round, highly structured procedure conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for All India Quota (AIQ) seats and respective state counselling authorities for state quota seats. Navigating these rounds strategically can be the difference between securing a seat in a government medical college and missing out entirely.
Understanding the Counselling Rounds
Round 1: The Initial Allocation & Free Exit
Round 1 is open to all qualified candidates who register. In this round, candidates submit college preferences. If you are allotted a seat, you can choose to join the college or exercise a 'Free Exit' where you do not join but suffer no financial penalty (your security deposit remains safe).
Round 2: Seat Upgradation & Deposit Forfeiture
Round 2 allows candidates to upgrade their allotted seat from Round 1 or try for fresh allotments. It is crucial to note that if you are allotted a seat in Round 2 and fail to join, your security deposit will be forfeited, and you must register fresh in the next round.
Round 3 (Mop-Up Round)
The Mop-up round is conducted for seats that remain vacant after Round 2. Fresh registrations are allowed. Once a candidate is allotted a seat in Round 3, they cannot exit or upgrade, and they must join the allotted college.
Stray Vacancy Round
This is the final round conducted online. No fresh registrations or choice modifications are allowed. Seats are allocated strictly based on merit from the existing choice lists of unallotted candidates.
Pro Tip: Always lock your choices in descending order of preference. Do not fill colleges you are not willing to join under any circumstances.
